Newborn Uja Brings Hope for Endangered Bangka Mouse Deer Conservation

A baby Bangka mouse deer (Tragulus kanchil) named Uja was born at the Alobi Babel Wildlife Rescue Center, Kampoeng Reklamasi Timah Air Jangkang. Uja’s mother was entrusted to the South Sumatra BKSDA eight months ago following the interception of an attempted smuggling attempt from Belitung to Bangka Island involving one male and two female mouse deer.

Currently, the team is providing extra monitoring and care for the mother and Uja, while awaiting further instructions from BKSDA. Concurrently, a habitat study is being conducted to identify a suitable release location for Sambar and mouse deer.

The population of Bangka mouse deer in the wild on Bangka and Belitung islands is critically endangered due to habitat loss and widespread hunting. We urge the community and government to collaborate in conservation efforts to ensure the survival of this species in the wild.

Salam lestari !
