Learning Mist-Netting and Bird-Ringing: Student Experience at the University of Sheffield

As a student enrolled in the Research Methods in Avian Biodiversity and Conservation module at The University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, I gained valuable insights into wildlife conservation techniques, particularly focused on birds. One significant aspect of the course involved learning about bird ringing and nest finding.

Under the guidance of Professor Ben Hatchwell and two certified bird ringers, I acquired essential skills and knowledge in bird ringing and mist netting. Bird ringing involvesĀ capturing birds using mist netting and attaching a small metal ring to one of their legs. After ringing a bird, measurements like wing length and weight are taken, alongside recording the bird’s species, age, and sex.

These skills are particularly important for my work at the Alobi Foundation on Bangka Island, where bird rehabilitation and conservation efforts are underway. I aim to apply these skills and knowledge to track bird movements effectively, contributing to conservation efforts at the foundation.

Salam Lestari !
