The Alobi Foundation team received a report about the presence of a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) around a fish pond owned by the University of Bangka Belitung (UBB), located in Balun Ijuk Village, Merawang District, Bangka Regency. The crocodile was successfully captured using a snare trap that had been set up around the pond area. It measured 1.15 meters in length, weighed 3 kilograms, and was identified as a male.

The crocodile was first spotted by UBB security personnel during a night patrol. At first, the guard mistook the animal for a monitor lizard when seen from a distance. However, upon closer inspection, it was confirmed to be a juvenile crocodile.

Another report mentioned the possible presence of a second crocodile, approximately two meters long, which is believed to still roam around a small lake adjacent to the pond. When the Alobi team arrived at the location, this second crocodile could not be located.

The Alobi Foundation team then conducted a brief investigation to determine how the crocodile had entered the university area. It is suspected that the animal came from a tributary of the Jerambah Gantung River, located about 40 meters away from the pond. The river is separated from the pond by a concrete wall. However, the team discovered a hole beneath the wall, measuring about 1.2 meters wide and 0.5 meters deep, which likely served as the crocodile’s access point.

Following the incident, UBB authorities installed warning signs around the area to prevent potential human–wildlife conflicts. The captured crocodile has since been transferred to the rehabilitation enclosure at Alobi’s Air Jangkang Wildlife Rescue Center. A veterinary examination has been conducted, confirming that the crocodile is in good health and shows no signs of injury or illness.
